Terms of Use for the DGI Data Governance Framework, Supporting Documentation, Images and other DGI Resources
These terms apply to all Data Governance Institute-published materials and websites except for those materials published on the Data Governance and Stewardship Community of Practice, located at DataStewardship.com, which are covered separately later in this document
The Data Governance Institute (henceforth referred to as the Institute) intends for the DGI Data Governance Framework (henceforth referred to as the Framework) to be a freely available resource for the use of organizations and individuals developing and assisting with Data Governance efforts and education.
The Institute both permits and encourages Enterprises or individuals to use the Framework, supporting documentation, images and other Institute-created resources under the following conditions of use:
Attribution must always be included in all uses, whether for the whole Framework, excerpts or supporting documentation (see attribution rules below.)
All resources published or linked to from Institute websites authored or created by third parties (ex. BeyeNETWORK provided resources) are governed by the individual copyright restrictions of the copyright holders. Publication of either whole documents or excerpts on Institute websites should not be construed in any way as permission to use these materials elsewhere.
Permitted usage is for an internal Data Governance effort, for educational purposes, for inclusion in attributed industry presentations, or for attributed website or print media quotations. Permitted usage does not include creating or delivering service or educational materials to third parties for compensation or as part of a compensated engagement. (See expressly forbidden uses below.)
Terms of Use for Resources Published on the Data Governance and Stewardship Community of Practice, located at DataStewardship.com.
Materials authored by the Institute and/or Gwen Thomas published on DataStewardship.com are provided for use by members of the Data Governance and Stewardship Community of Practice and may not be distributed in any way. This expressly includes, but is not limited to, link collections and descriptions, which are the result of hundreds of hours of research by Data Governance Institute associates.
Third party originated resources published or linked to on DataStewardship.com are governed by the individual copyright restrictions of the copyright holders. Publication of either whole documents or excerpts on DataStewardship.com should not be construed in any way as permission to use these materials elsewhere.
Expressly Prohibited Use:
There are many, many DGI copyrighted presentations, articles, web pages, images, and templates published around the internet - on sites owned & operated by the Data Governance Institute and by others. These prohibitions apply whether or not the material is found on an Institute-published resource or elsewhere.
Any use of the Framework, supporting documentation, other Institute or Gwen Thomas-created documents or images by entities providing service to 3rd parties, with the exception of quoting from Institute-created materials with attribution, is prohibited without prior arrangement with Gwen Thomas or other authorized representative of the Data Governance Institute
This includes but is not limited to a consultant's use of the Framework to provide a service to clients. Any prior arrangement or permission shall not constitute permission for future use unless specifically stated in the arrangement by the Institute. All permissions granted by the Data Governance Institute involving 3rd party use may be revoked at any time by the Institute.
Any inclusion of Institute or Gwen Thomas-created documents, images or concepts in books, publications, software or other technological products is prohibited without prior arrangement with Gwen Thomas or other authorized Institute representative.
Prohibited Use Exceptions;
These prohibited uses are not meant to prohibit use by either presenters at industry conferences or website authors from quoting Institute resources. All presentation uses must include attribution, and all website uses must include attribution and a link to the page on the Institute-published website that the resource originates from. This usage permission does not include materials available on DataStewardship.com.
Attribution Rules:
Always include a caption showing the source and copyright owner (The Data Governance Institute) for any image.
Provide attribution for direct quotes.
Provide attribution for paraphrased content or conclusions.
If you are compiling a list (or other set of content) that includes content from one of our lists (such as components of the framework), then attribute our contribution (for example: "The following elements of a Data Governance program expands on the components in the DGI Data Governance Framework.")
In a document with footnotes or a bibliography, your reference should include the publisher (The Data Governance Institute) and the author (Gwen Thomas)
You do not have to attribute the blatantly obvious or something that really can only be stated one way, even if your language is identical to ours. (The classic example is "January 1 is the first day of the year." In the case of this work we acknowledge that probably every DG framework employs Data Stewards. On the other hand, we introduced "Decision Rights, Accountabilities, and Controls" and terms such as "Rules of Engagement.")
The above rules apply even if you only want to "borrow" a very small section - it is a myth that copyright protection is tied to the percentage used from a copyrighted work.
