Message from Data Governance Institute Founder Gwen Thomas
Hello Readers,
I know we’ve all heard the maxim “You can’t manage what you don’t measure.” Finally, we’re starting to get baseline measurements for the state of Data Governance adoption and practices.
International Association for Information and Data Quality (IAIDQ) and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Information Quality Program (UALR-IQ)have released a new study:
The State of Information and Data Governance: Understanding How Organizations Govern Their Information and Data Assets.
Study authors Elizabeth Pierce, Wendell Scott Dismute, and C. Lwanga Yonke have done a good job of capturing metrics about current and planned Data Governance programs.

Key Findings from The State of Information and Data Governance: Understanding How Organizations Govern Their Information and Data Assets
86% of all survey participants expect
those efforts to increase over the next 2 years
Fifty-six percent (56%) of respondents indicate their organization’s information governance initiatives are still in the pre-implementation stages
28% of respondents indicate that their organization’s first “iteration” has been implemented within the last few years
Organizations have multiple objectives for their information governance efforts. Improving data quality (80%) and the establishment of clear decision rules and decision-making processes for shared data (66%) are the objectives most often cited by respondents
The most common information governance activities are standardizing data definitions across the enterprise (71%) and providing common information strategies, processes, policies, and standards (62%).
Be sure to read the study for more information about maturity levels, focus areas, and organizational structures.

Other Surveys of Note
Two-thirds of IT executives have delayed or abandoned data governance initiatives, according to a July 2007 survey from software vendor Exeros. The survey highlighted the difficulty in understanding complex business rules and relationships that direct how data is interpreted and mapped throughout enterprise systems. An Exeros whitepaper that outlines the survey findings can be accessed at the following URL:

The April 2007 issue of IEEE Computer magazine contains the results of a study conducted by academics and consultants from Virginia Commonwealth University/Institute for Data Research, Data Blueprint, and J. Sergeant Reynolds Community College. “Measuring Data Management Practice Maturity: A Community’s Self-Assessment,” tells us that Data Management groups are often more mature than IT Management groups.
